“There comes a time when the world gets quiet and the only thing left is your own heart. So you’d better learn the sound of it. Otherwise you’ll never understand what it’s saying.”
Sarah Dessen, Just Listen
Andrés has this theory.
You know those people (or maybe you are one) that can never be doing nothing by themselves? They’re always texting, emailing or calling. Always have the TV on or music playing. Always trying to distract themselves from silence when they’re alone.
Andrés thinks it’s really important (especially for your emotional health & overall stability) to be okay with yourself alone in the quiet, & to allow time for introspection that comes from sitting alone with your conscience.
I think it’s pretty deep, & I also think that’s why he’s so wise. (He’s also wise because he’s 9 years, 10 months & 12 days older than me… but who’s counting?) A lot of people come to him for advice, even a couple of my sisters. He has excellent morals. He makes tough decisions look like no-brainers because he can quickly navigate between right & wrong with a compassionate heart.
So. I want to dub this theory the Black Man Thinking Time Theory. (It’s a Cleveland joke from Family Guy.)
