We Could Do It Real Big, Bigger Than You Ever Done It

Andrés picked out his wedding bands from Amazon. I was expecting them to be expensive but they were actually less than $40 a piece so I got him two: a beveled edge polished tungsten carbide band and a brushed black tungesten carbide band. He says the black one is for when he’s mad at me.

Since I saved so much, I wanted to get one engraved on the inside. I called around to local jewelers and they all said the same thing: tungsten carbide is too hard to engrave without special equipment. I was bummed. I started Googling places and found Titanium Kay, an online jeweler that offers laser engraving. I signed the waiver and shipped them the ring on Tuesday morning. The way I figured, if they weren’t legit, I was out like $25. But they are legitimate, and they’re amazing. I got the ring back this morning (FOUR DAYS LATER), perfectly engraved.

It says “You’re the fucking best.”

When we were becoming more serious in the summer of 2009, Andrés sent me a remix of Drake’s “Best I Ever Had.” He always has these smash-ups and mixes that I’d never heard — this one came from the album “Street Shit pt. 3”. I was terrified at the beginning of our relationship. I wasn’t ready to fall in love but everything was so overwhelmingly RIGHT. I didn’t want to invest, learn another man, and let him learn me, just to eventually lose him. I was unstable and overanalyzing everything. But he was kind and patient and just so good. Good to me, good to his mom, good to my family, good to himself. I remember listening to this song on repeat driving home from his condo way too late. It kind of just became our song. He really is the best I’ve ever had.

And we’re doing it real big, bigger than we’ve ever done it, in one month and eleven days.

Lately

Saturday was dark and rainy and perfect. We spent most of the morning and early afternoon cuddled on the couch watching Breaking Bad. We got ready and then ventured out to my friend’s family’s Vietnamese restaurant in northwest DC for some big bowls of Hue Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue), Crispy Spring Rolls, Shrimp Toast, Bo Dun Skewers, and Banana Flambé with Ice Cream for dessert. It was incredible. One of the best meals I’ve ever had. The kind of meal that I’m already planning to have again before I’ve finished the last bite.

On our way home we stopped at a shoe store in Pentagon City so I could use my coupon and get some wedding shoes. Andrés helped me find some strappy dark purple heels that should work well. My wedding dress and faux fur wrap are very warm, almost TOO warm, so these heels should let some heat escape from my body. For the reception, I splurged on a pair of matte black Tieks that I’m currently breaking in. I’ve never spent that much on shoes, but I’ve wanted of pair of nice flats for a while, and by going with black instead of the more expensive diamond white Tieks, I’ll likely wear them again. (I can’t handle white shoes.) (I also can’t handle heels all night.) (I can handle slippers and yoga pants REALLY well, though.)

Older Than the Trees, Younger Than the Mountains

Andrés and I (and Ruby!) took a trip to my parent’s vacation home (the front windows of which can be seen in the first picture) in the mountains this past weekend to attend a Bluegrass Festival and to meet with the pastor who will marry us.

I love being up there. The air is crisp, it’s consistently about 10 degrees cooler, and life just slows down a little. I drank coffee from a French press and I don’t even like coffee. I’d never want to live there because I can’t imagine that kind of seclusion every day, but I sure do love to vacation in cabins in the mountains.

We read over the ceremony (which is about 12 minutes without adding in any songs) and our vows, and talked about the paperwork side of getting married. There was this holy-shit-this-is-real moment for me. Not in a freak-out-cold-feet kind of way… in a I-can’t-wait-to-marry-him! kind of way.

Ruby hated the ride. We drugged her with anti-nausea medicine from the vet, which did prevent her from throwing up every 15 minutes of the 4 hour drive, but she instead drooled the entire trip. The backseat of my car was covered in puddles. Poor thing. We’re going to work with her to get her over her car anxiety.

On the way back we met with our DJ, who is quite a character. He’s a 10th degree black belt in Aikido, a US Marshall, an ordained minister, ex celebrity body guard, and a landlord! He also used to be a body double for Garth Brooks. And has hand tattoos. THIS GUY. Right? I’m looking forward to him DJing our wedding.

Crafting

Top: Yesterday, Andrés & I hosted a ladies brunch / wedding decor making party. We had lots of family and friends come over to help make lace wrapped jars and coffee filter peonies. It was such a good time — I love being surrounded by such generous, beautiful, talented women. So grateful to know these women.

Bottom: (this photo is by my little sister, Y) Me helping my mom compose a picture in Instagram of the table set with all of the brunch food. We had five people Instagraming the crafting and Ruby!
